Cerberus
The fierce three-headed dog of Greek and Roman
mythology
which was the guardian of the gate to the infernal regions. Hercules had to overcome it without using
any weapons and bring it to Eurystheus, king of Mycenae.
In demonology
Cerberus — also known as Cerbere, Naberius or
Naberus — was responsible for restoring lost dignities and honors,
and for teaching arts and
sciences. He is said to appear at times as a cock with a coarse voice. He is a Grand-Marquis of Hell, and
the 24th of Solomon's seventy-two spirits.
According to Collin de Plancy's 'Dictionnaire Infernal',
he is a strong and powerful demon commanding 29 legions (or 19 according to
the 'Goetia'). Johann Wier also mentions
him in his 'Pseudomonarchia
Daemonum' (1583):
"Naberius [Naberus], alias Cerberus, is a
valiant marquesse, shewing himselfe in the forme of a crowe, when he
speaketh with a hoarse voice: he maketh a man amiable and cunning in all
arts, and speciallie in rhetorike, he procureth the losse of prelacies
and dignities: nineteene legions heare him."
