The collective name given by the schoolmen of the Middle Ages to the four liberal arts, Arithmetic, Music, Geometry and Astronomy, forming the upper division of the seven liberal arts.
These ancient disciplines should not be understood in a purely scientific mode, however. 'Arithmetic' in earlier times included a great deal of number symbolism, and today should be called Arithmology, Arithmancy and Numerology; 'Geometry' included the sort of mystical perspectives now classified as Sacred Geometry (Gematria); 'Music' included all the arts and focused primarily on harmonious relationships; 'Astronomy' included not only Astrology but also the various means of tracking the cycles of time.
These ancient categories were first formulated in the Western world by the Pythagorian Brotherhood, inspired by older Egyptian and Mesopotamian writings and lore.
The Quadrivium was the 'fourfold way' to knowledge, while the Trivium was the 'threefold way' to eloquence.
The Trivium and the Quadrivium forming the seven liberal arts remained central to education throughout the Western World until the beginning of the modern age.
