Body Snatcher

            

     


 


Formerly, a person who stole newly buried corpses to sell them for dissection at medical schools and universities.


 Before the Anatomy Act of 1832, the only legal supply of corpses for anatomical purposes in Great Britain were those condemned to death and dissection by the courts, which did not provide enough subjects for the medical schools and private anatomical schools — which required no license before 1832. In the 1700s, hundreds had been executed for trivial crimes, but by the 19th century only 55 people were being hanged each year, while, with the expansion of the medical schools, as many as 500 corpses were needed.


 The most famous body snatchers of all time were undoubtedly a drunken but efficient team of murderers, William Burke and William Hare. They wrote the blackest chapter in the annals of body snatching in 1828 in Edinburgh, Scotland, by not only stealing dead bodies but also 'helping' some to cross the final threshold to death. When they were finally caught by the British police, they had killed 16 people, just to sell their cadavers for £10 each.
